On the 31st of August in 1985 several wooden fragments were found by fishermen in the IJsselmeer near the afsluitdijk. The location of these fragments were about 180 to 200 meters away from the lunchroom ‘’het Monument’’. After a diving expedition it was determined that the fragments were that of a medium-sized wooden sailing vessel with a length of approx. 20 meters and a width of 4-6 meters. The fragments are sticking about half a meter out of the sand and the site has a depth of 7 meters. The site was already known by the local fishermen as the ‘’peperwrak’’ (pepper wreck). Whether the name is a direct reference to the possible cargo is not known.
